Impact of GST on Manufacturing, MSMEs, and Services in Ghaziabad

Abstract

The Goods and Services Tax (GST), introduced in India on 1 July 2017, represents one of the most significant indirect tax reforms aimed at creating a unified national market and simplifying the taxation system. The present study examines the impact of GST on manufacturing industries, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and service-sector organizations in Ghaziabad, an important industrial and commercial hub in Uttar Pradesh. The study investigates how GST has influenced ease of doing business, cost structure management, supply chain efficiency, compliance requirements, and overall business performance. A descriptive research design is adopted, utilizing both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data are collected from business owners, managers, accountants, and service providers through structured questionnaires, while secondary data are obtained from academic publications, government reports, and industry studies. The findings suggest that GST has improved tax transparency, reduced cascading taxation, and enhanced operational efficiency across sectors. However, challenges related to compliance costs, digital filing requirements, working capital management, and frequent regulatory changes continue to affect many MSMEs. The study concludes that while GST has contributed positively to business formalization and economic integration, targeted policy support is necessary to maximize its benefits for smaller enterprises in Ghaziabad.
